Hello everyone
Dec. 9th, 2005 12:11 amHi all.
It's supposed to snow tomorrow and it's really COLD tonight. I've a friend in Italy who says he's going to visit in January. Maine in January???? I'd rather go to Italy. Even Northern Italy.
I listen to NH public radio a lot. The other day they had a call-in show discussing the school dropout problem in NH. The state legislature, in their infinite wisdom, decided to solve the problem of a high dropout rate by making it illegal for anyone under 18 to drop out of school. What amazed me was that the discussion centered about how important it was to have a high school diploma these days. Factoids such as the high proportion of high school dropouts in prison were tossed out. But no discussion of why the kids were dropping out. No acknowledgement of different modes of learning, or that one can learn anything worthwhile outside of the classroom. No suggestion that perhaps the school system needs overhauling.
So now, if a kid feels school is strangling him, he can drop out and automatically be a criminal. But look on the bright side, there is still a solution: he can still act up and get himself expelled.
Asinine. Next the state will solve the crime rate by outlawing crime.... oh wait, they've already done that...
Strange noises from the kitchen. I'd better go see what the ferrets are up to.
